New York

Devils-Rangers Game Review

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Patrik Elias scored the only goal of the game, a successful wrister in the fourth shootout round, as the New Jersey Devils edged the New York Rangers, 1-0, in an Atlantic Division battle at Madison Square Garden which featured 96 total shots on goal.

Both goaltenders were phenomenal and earned an official shutout. New Jersey's Marty Brodeur extended his own NHL all-time record with the 107th shutout of his storied career and finished with 51 saves, while Henrik Lundqvist turned aside 45 shots for his 22nd career shutout. New Jersey has won four of its five games so far in the new calendar year.

"Both goaltenders had to be excellent to push the game to overtime, and even in overtime we both made saves," said Brodeur. "It was a pretty entertaining game despite the lack of goal scoring."

After three full periods, an overtime session, and the three scheduled regulation shootout rounds, there were still no goals scored. Finally, in the fourth round of the shootout after Brodeur stopped Brandon Dubinsky, Elias fired home a wrister from between the circles and the Devils celebrated the win.

The Rangers earned at least one point for the 12th time in their last 13 games overall (8-1-4).

"It was a fun game to play in -- there was a lot of energy, but it's a tough game to lose," Lundqvist said. "The fans were really into it even though it was 0-0 going into the shootout."

Midway through the second period, Rangers forward Brian Boyle had a clear breakaway, but Brodeur made a glove save.

The best scoring chance in regulation for New Jersey occurred with less than four minutes to go in the third period. Zach Parise was alone in front for a rebound, but couldn't get the puck over the goal line.

In the final seconds of regulation, New York blueliner Michael Del Zotto had a good look from the left half-wall with traffic in front of Brodeur, but to no avail.

"I thought we took care of the puck and both goalies played well," said Dubinsky. "We just needed to bury a couple of our chances and the game may have been different."

The Rangers controlled most of the action in the overtime session. Early on, Marian Gaborik was at the right post, but his weak wrister slid across the crease and softly hit off the opposite post before it slid away. With 45 seconds to go in OT, Michal Rozsival sent a sizzling one-timer on goal from the left point, but Brodeur kicked the shot aside.

In the first shootout round, Erik Christensen failed to even get a shot off when the puck slid off his stick prior to his attempted deke move. Parise, though, could not fool Lundqvist with a deke of his own. The next round saw both shooters -- New York's Ales Kotalik and Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner -- attempt unsuccessful wrist shots from the slot.

In the third frame of the shootout, Gaborik tried to deke around Brodeur, whose poke-check altered Gaborik's move. However, with a chance to win it, Travis Zajac was stifled by the pad of Lundqvist after a snap shot.
