I was completely taken aback by - Bloomberg: Albany Might Make NYC "Suffer"
As state legislators prepare to face the worsening financial situation in Albany, Mayor Bloomberg warned that budget cuts from could make life particularly miserable for New York City residents. "We're just going to have to suffer," he said on his WOR radio show. Following his warning yesterday that the state might cut even funding for the MTA as it attempts to plug a budget deficit of about $10 billion before the April 1 deadline, the Mayor warned that that cuts could be widespread, according to the Post. He also shared these less-than-encouraging words: "If they start taking it out on us, and disproportionately on us versus the rest of the state ... then we're in big trouble."
NYC is still being talked about Winter weather socking NYC
New York City and its suburbs are preparing to get walloped by the snowstorm that has crippled travel and caused power outages across the East Coast.
Stores closed early and driving became treacherous as snow began sticking to the roads. There were minor delays at the area's three major airports.
National Weather Service meteorologist Patrick Maloit says that the storm will drop about 8 to 10 inches of snow on the city. A blizzard was expected to hit the Long Island suburbs, with 12 to 18 inches forecast.
Snow was dropping steadily by about 6:30 p.m.
Maloit says the area will get hit with the brunt of the storm in the next hour or two as a band of heavy snow moves northward.
Five deaths appeared to have been caused by the storm system, which stretched from the Carolinas north to New England and also spread into some Midwestern states. The 14 inches of snow that fell at Reagan National Airport outside Washington was the most ever recorded for a single December day, while about 9 inches had fallen in Philadelphia.
Those who did venture out were treated to nearly desolate stores on what is usually one of the busiest shopping days of the year. There were virtually no lines to get a picture with a mall Santa on the last weekend before Christmas.
The National Guard used Humvees to rescue stranded motorists in Virginia and some 500 people had sought warmth and refuge in emergency shelters.
"The snow has not stopped falling, the storm isn't over, and folks should not think this is crying wolf," said Laura Southard, a spokeswoman for the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.
More than two feet of snow fell in some areas since yesterday, and the nation's capital was under a blizzard warning. Public transportation nearly ground to a halt, but it wasn't enough to keep senators from staying in session to debate health care reform.
The slow-moving storm was headed to the Northeast, where forecasters said parts of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachussetts could see more than 16 inches by Sunday night. Forecasters expected the storm to drop as many as 10 inches on New York City.
Snowplows cleared the runway at Andrews Air Force Base in suburban Washington as President Barack Obama returned from climate talks in Copenhagen. The White House said Obama rode in a motorcade back to the White House, instead of taking his helicopter, because of the conditions.
The region was virtually a sea of white. The Smithsonian Institution closed its museums, and the National Mall, which normally would be swarming with tourists, instead was the scene of snowball fights and cross-country skiers.
Negative New York City news: East Coast tunnels out from severe snowstorm
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Northeast began digging out on Sunday from a massive snowstorm that buried cities from Washington to Boston under as much as 2 feet of snow, creating travel chaos and hampering Christmas shopping.
U.S.
Nearly 2 feet of snow piled up in the Baltimore-Washington area on Saturday in the largest snowstorm to hit the region since February 2003, while New York City saw totals up to a foot before the monster storm churned into New England.
Boston, Cape Cod and southeastern Massachusetts areas saw as much as 2 feet of snow before the storm moved out to sea. Areas of eastern Long Island had blizzard-like conditions and nearly 2 feet of precipitation.
The storm gave Washington its snowiest December on record, said Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel.
"After six winters here in Washington of sub-par (below average) snowfall ... we picked up a whole season's worth in one storm," Seidel said. The average for a season is just under 16 inches.
Washington-area airports were hit with significant delays and cancellations, as were New York's three metropolitan airports, which remained opened. Airlines canceled hundreds of flights, with few planes either arriving or departing.
Washington's Reagan National airport shut down on Saturday and reopened about midday on Sunday.
The driving snowstorm did not stop the U.S. Senate from convening and working on legislation to reform U.S. healthcare.
And the shows -- Broadway's -- went on with New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg urging residents to enjoy the city's cultural institutions and take advantage of ticket cancellations for hot shows.
"SHOPPER STOPPER"
The storm also took a bite out of retail sales on one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year as Christmas looms.
Washington Mayor Adrian Fenty declared a snow emergency and asked District of Columbia residents to keep off the streets as the U.S. capital faced what one TV station dubbed "The Shopper Stopper Storm."
Washington closed above-ground operations of its subway and stopped all bus services by early afternoon Saturday because streets were rapidly becoming impassable.
In New York City, where totals ranged from about 6 inches to a foot, Bloomberg said, "The snow coming in later yesterday than forecast was a godsend for the stores," which reported only small downticks in business on Saturday.
New York subways remained running and its public school were expected to be open on Monday. Long Island Rail Road service was extremely limited on Sunday, a spokesman said.
Amtrak trains experienced cancellations, a reduced schedule and delays, with seats at a premium as holiday travelers sought alternatives when air travel was severely disrupted.
Motorists across the region were urged to stay off treacherous roads and several main arteries were closed. In Washington, drivers who ventured out often had to abandon their cars due to deep snow on streets.
The storm halted transportation in the Boston area, with dozens of flights canceled at Logan Airport, which had only one runway open. Traffic picked up later in the day as the snow slowed and flights began to trickle in from up and down and the East Coast.
At least one person died in the storm. The Virginia Department of Emergency Management said a 68-year-old woman died in a car crash in southern Virginia on Friday night.

The Falcons (6-7) lost to New Orleans 23-26 at home in Week 14 and now sit second in the NFC South. QB Chris Redman made 23 of 34 passes for 303 yards with one TD and an interception. QB Matt Ryan is still listed as RB Jason Snelling had 10 carries for 37 yards with a TD, while WR Michael Jenkins made three catches for 82 yards with a TD. Their defense had no sacks or interceptions. The Falcons won’t be able to pass the ball against the Jets league best pass defense. Their best chance at moving the chains will be their 13th ranked running game against the Jets 12th ranked rush defense. Their top RB Michael Turner has been out since week 10 with an ankle injury and is questionable for Sunday, without him the Falcons are 1-4 SU. RB Jason Snelling hasn’t been able to fill the missing void of Turner and has only one TD in three games, while RB Jerious Norwood has none. Atlanta has never had consecutive winning seasons and they would have to win its last three games in order to accomplish that feat for the first time. The Falcons have averaged 16.7ppg and allowed 25.7ppg in their last three games. They are 1-5 SU on the road where they average 25.5ppg and give up an average28.3ppg.They are 8-5 ATS and 7-6 over/under.
The Jets (7-6) won in Tampa Bay 26-3 in Week 14 and sit third in the AFC East. QB Kellen Clemens made 12 of 23 passes for 111 yards. RB Thomas Jones had 24 carries for 99 yards with two TD’s, while WR Braylon Edwards made three catches for 37 yards. Their defense had three sacks and three interceptions on the day. QB Mark Sanchez returns to action against the Falcons, the rookie quarterback says he is ready to brave what will likely be the coldest conditions he has ever played in. The coldest game Sanchez has played in thus far was the 16-13 overtime loss to the Bills at home on Oct. 18, where he threw five interceptions. CB Darrelle Revis has established himself as one of the best, if not the best, cover corners in the league with six interceptions. He has shut down receivers like Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, and now he gets to try his hand at stopping Falcons Pro Bowl wideout Roddy White. The Jets defense is ranked best in the league at stopping the pass and they allow the least amount of points per-game in the league (16.2ppg). The Jets have been maddeningly inconsistent this season, but RB Thomas Jones remains consistent. Veteran RB Thomas Jones leads the best ground game in the league and he just continues to go about his business and put up big numbers . He is fourth in the NFL with 1,167 rushing yards and tied for third with 11 rushing touchdowns. The Jets have averaged 20.7ppg and allowed 7.3ppg in their last three games. They are 3-3 SU at home where they average 19.5ppg and allow 17ppg. They are 7-6 ATS and 5-7 over/under.
Recent Trends to Consider:
- Jets are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games in Week 15.
- Jets are 4-1 ATS vs. a team with a losing record.
- Jets are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games after accumulating less than 150 yards passing in their previous game.

- Falcons are 12-2 ATS in their last 14 games following a S.U. loss.
- Falcons are 0-7-2 ATS in their last 9 games in Week 15.
- Falcons are 5-2 ATS vs. a team with a winning record.
- Under is 3-0-1 in Jets last 4 games overall.

It's Coming...Weatherman Predict City's First Snow Storm of Winter (we all expected to see this)
NEW YORK, NY December 18, 2009 —The weather outside tomorrow could be frightful if Old Man Winter has his way. A winter storm is expected to blanket the metropolitan area with snow starting Saturday and continuing through Sunday.
Depending on the path of the storm, there could be accumulations of one to three inches in the city, and six to 12 inches in New Jersey and Long Island. A winter storm watch is in effect for Saturday.
There is one bright spot: The harsh weather forecast has forced New York City Transit to cancel all weekend construction work and the subway detours planned to accommodate it. The exception is along the Q line in Brooklyn, where four platforms will remain closed until sometime next year for a major rehabilitation project.
The Buildings Department is advising contractors and property owners to secure construction sites because of the possibility of high winds and heavy snowfall.
And for football fans, New Jersey officials are warning it could be tricky getting to Sunday's Jets game against the Falcons. The 1 p.m. start time could coincide with snow plowing in the parking lot if the storm continues into Sunday, limiting the number of parking spots.
Officials are hoping more fans will choose to use the new rail connections from Hoboken and Secaucus to the Meadowlands.
Not again - Winter storm paralyzes Washington
WASHINGTON, Dec. 19 (UPI) -- A storm moving up the East Coast brought Washington to its knees Saturday with a record-breaking snowfall in the nation's capital.
Snow was falling from Virginia to New York through the afternoon. Around the time the first flakes fell in New York City, the snow was ending in Richmond, Va.
By early afternoon, all bus service and most trains had stopped running and no flights were arriving or departing at Ronald Reagan National Airport and Thurgood Marshall Baltimore-Washington International, The Washington Post reported. Officials in the region asked residents to stay off the roads and a section of Interstate 95, the major north-south corridor, was closed in Virginia.
The storm brought heavy rain Friday to South Florida and dumped snow in the mountains of North Carolina before moving into Virginia. At least three deaths in the state were blamed on the weather, CNN said.
Thousands of people spent Friday night in their cars on Interstate 81, which runs up the Shenandoah Valley to Pennsylvania, Jeff Caldwell, a spokesman for the Virginia Department of Transportation, told the Post. A tractor-trailer crash Friday blocked the highway.
But some government business continued in the capital. President Obama apologized to reporters for holding a news conference, telling reporters that after his years in Chicago, the snow was finally making Washington "feel like home."
Some coastal areas were hit hard. Ocean City, Md., got snow, which turned to rain and was expected to return to snow, The Baltimore Sun reported. The beach resort was under advisories for high surf and winter weather, as well as a coastal flood warning.
In New York and New England, the National Weather Service predicts the heaviest snowfall for Long Island and Cape Cod. The storm was expected to hit Massachusetts late Saturday.
