New York City Wants Less Salt (can I expect worse news)

NEW YORK – First it was the elimination of trans fat; now, it’s sodium that New York City officials are attacking, the New York Times reports. Yesterday, Mayor Bloomberg’s administration unveiled a proposal to encourage food makers and restaurant chains to curb the amount of salt in their foods.

The city says health agencies in other parts of the country support their goal of lowering sodium in packaged and restaurant food by 25 percent during the next five years. Reducing salt in foods would lower high blood pressure incidences and would probably thwart some heart attacks and strokes related to that condition, health officials say.

“We all consume way too much salt, and most of the salt we consume is in the food when we buy it,” said Dr. Thomas Farley, city health commissioner. The city health department is heading the charge for less salt. With 80 percent of salt in our diet coming from restaurant or packaged food, Farley said lowering the sodium amount in those foods would keep people healthier.

Meanwhile, food manufacturers are slashing sodium in their products, but are not emphasizing the results, the Wall Street Journal reports. The companies are discovering that consumers like it better when salt levels decline slowly over time.

For example, by 2011, ConAgra Food’s Chef Boyardee canned pasta will have 35 percent less sodium — a drop that took five years — but the lower salt will not be trumpeted on the label. Campbell Soup’s original V8 juice also quietly reduced its salt by 32 percent over an eight-year period.

“If you gradually move sodium down in products, the consumers that use those products get used to them still tasting good but at lower salt,” said Douglas Balentine, Unilever NV’s North American director of nutrition and health.

Last October, ConAgra revealed that it would reduce salt in around 80 percent of its products by an average of 20 percent by 2015, while the Sara Lee Corp. announced a comparable pledge last month.

Salt-Loving Mayor Seeks to Trim It From NYC Diets (shocking)

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg — who is known to shake salt on his pizza — is focusing on sodium as the next unhealthy enemy in his crusade to coax people into eating better.

Bloomberg's health department has already banned trans fats in restaurant meals and forced chain eateries to post calorie counts on menus. On Monday, the city set guidelines recommending maximum amounts of salt for a variety of restaurant and store-bought foods, with the goal of cutting salt levels in food by a quarter overall in five years.

"I use a lot of salt," Bloomberg admitted Monday. Despite any personal eating habits he may have, the mayor is fixated on nutrition as a public health concern.

"We're trying to extend the lives and improve the lives of people who live in this city," he said.

Unlike the city's trans fat ban and calorie count rule, the salt initiative is voluntary.

The recommendations posted on the city health department's Web site call for substantial reductions in the salt content of many products, from a 20 percent drop in peanut butter to a 40 percent decline in canned vegetables.

The targets include a 40 percent reduction in breakfast cereals and flavored snack chips, and a 25 percent reduction for cold cuts, processed cheese and salsa.

Not even the mayor's favorite foods — popcorn and hot dogs — were spared: The city wants food manufacturers to work on reducing salt by 30 percent in popcorn and 20 percent in wieners.

Health officials say Americans now eat about twice the amount of salt they should. Too much sodium contributes to high blood pressure, which can cause heart attack and stroke.

New York City's program is modeled in part after a similar initiative in Britain that has been under way since 2003.

Seventeen national health organizations and 25 other city or state health agencies have endorsed New York City's effort, called the National Salt Reduction Initiative.

The New York Jets vs. San Diego Chargers line opened Sunday afternoon at San Diego -9.  New York will play in San Diego following Baltimore's stunning defeat of New England on the road.  The Ravens will go on to play Indianapolis as a +6 ½ underdog at Bookmaker.com.

Mark Sanchez became just the fourth rookie QB in NFL history to win his postseason debut, joining Shaun King ('99 Bucs), Ben Roethlisberger ('04 Steelers) and Joe Flacco ('08 Ravens). Sanchez and Flacco are the only ones to do it on the road.

"He had the eye of the tiger today and he was ready to get out there and throw it around," coach Rex Ryan said of his quarterback. "I see him getting better and better each day on the practice field. What a job he's done. I think he's tired of hearing he's the weak link on this football team."

Sanchez was an efficient 12 for 15 for 182 yards and 1 TD, good for a passer rating of 139.4.

Jets rookie Shonn Greene carried 21 times for 135 yards and a TD. Greene's total was tied for the third-highest by a rookie in his postseason debut since the merger. It was also tied for the second-highest single-game total in Jets posteason history.

New York will play the hottest team in the NFL right now, the San Diego Chargers.  The Chargers have won 11 straight matching their best single-season streak (1961).

San Diego finished 13-3, the second most wins in franchise history. The team won 14 in 2006.

"You work hard to get to this point," said Chargers coach Norv Turner, who was fired by the Redskins after 13 games in the 2000 season. "You work hard to position yourself. You work hard to get the bye and the home game. Now we want to take advantage of that."

Will the Jets beat the Chargers in the AFC divisional round?

The Jets' charter flight home from Cincinnati was decorated with green and white balloons, streamers and congratulatory poster boards. A nice touch, for sure, but nothing compared to what Rex Ryan has in mind for Feb. 9.

Ryan distributed a postseason calendar last week to the team, marked with the dates of everything from the wild-card game to the Super Bowl to the parade. He took that presumptuous step because he wants the players to visualize the journey, from the first game to the ticker tape.

"If you're not man enough or have enough faith in your team to put it on the schedule, you wouldn't," Ryan said Sunday. "But we do. We feel we have an outstanding chance. We feel we have an excellent football team. We're not ashamed of the fact that I believe it can happen."

The Jets' 24-14 victory over the Bengals was "a giant step forward," according to Ryan, but the road to the confetti blizzard is about to get a lot tougher. They're heading to San Diego for a Sunday afternoon showdown against the Chargers (13-3) in the AFC divisional playoffs.

The Jets avoided a rematch with the top-seeded Colts, thanks to the Ravens' upset of the Patriots, but they hardly consider it a lucky break. The Chargers are the hottest team in the league, having won 11 straight, and they haven't been held under 20 points in any game. Their last loss was Oct. 19 to the Broncos, 34-23.

Ryan's top-ranked defense will face a big-play offense led by Philip Rivers, who has passed for 4,254 yards, 28 touchdowns and only nine interceptions.

If you think Ryan is intimidated, you haven't been paying attention for the past 12 months.

"The reality is, if we win three games, we're the world champions," Ryan said. "It's so close you can almost taste it."

If the fifth-seeded Jets stun the Chargers, which would be one of the biggest upsets in team history, they would face the Colts-Ravens winner in the AFC Championship Game. It will be at the Meadowlands if Ryan's former team, the Ravens (the No. 6 seed), knocks off the Colts in the other divisional game.

And you thought the old stadium was history. Maybe not yet.

If it's the Colts, the Jets will get a chance to prove their upset two weeks ago wasn't a Curtis Painter-induced fluke.

But first the Jets have to figure out a way to stop the Chargers, who have three targets with at least 776 receiving yards - Vincent Jackson (1,167), tight end Antonio Gates (1,157) and Malcolm Floyd (776). They're coming off a bye week, so they will be well-rested.

The Jets won't be, but they do have plenty of their own momentum, having won six of seven. They also have a maturing Mark Sanchez to complement their league-leading ground attack. Sanchez, growing up before our eyes, has gone three straight games without a turnover.

"When our quarterback plays well," safety Jim Leonhard, "we feel like we have a great chance to beat anybody."

Ryan mapped out the postseason plan after the season-ending win over the Bengals. In Mangini World, it was always one week at a time. Maybe that's why, when they made the playoffs in 2006, it "was miserable," according to one player. "I know this sounds crazy, but some guys just wanted it to be over."

Ryan dares to dream big.

"Sometimes when you get in the playoffs, you think, ‘Okay, we're in the playoffs, but is it really reality to think we can win a Super Bowl?'" Ryan said. "When you lay it out in front of them, I think they can visualize it and realize, ‘Hey, man, we just take care of our business ... we can get this done.'"

Hundreds strip in NYC for No Pants Subway Ride - Why do I suddenly feel cheerless

NEW YORK – Hundreds of New Yorkers with an exhibitionist streak spent Sunday afternoon riding the subways in boxers, briefs and lacy panties during the ninth annual No Pants Subway Ride, despite chilly weather.

The group Improv Everywhere, a group that says its mission is to cause "scenes of chaos and joy in public places," organized the stunt. Participants met up at six locations around the city and got their half-naked marching orders.

"It's a place to meet people that's not your traditional bar scene," said Brady Kirchberg, 26, taking part in his third no-pants ride.

Kirchberg was one of about 300 people who gathered at the Great Hill in Central Park and then split up to ride two different trains.

The event's somewhat complicated choreography involved a few people taking off their pants once the subway door closed. At the next stop they got off and waited on the platform for the next train. Meanwhile more people took off their pants, got off and boarded the train behind the first one. After four of five stops that second train was full of half-clothed straphangers.

"I just wanted to do something fun and spontaneous," said Ashley Kemp, 24.

Participants were told to act like nothing unusual was going on. Most folded their pants, stashed them in their backpacks and resumed reading magazines or chatting with their companions.

Like many of the men, Kirchberg wore relatively modest boxers as he leafed through The New Yorker. Some women drew stares in their skimpier undies.

But most bystanders were blase.

"It looks chilly," said Dawn Young, waiting on the platform at 96th Street alongside several pantsless people.

Gintas Norvila said, "It's the first time I've seen it. It looks very interesting," and went back to reading Dostoevsky's "Notes from Underground."

The event started in 2002 with just seven people.

Some of Improv Everywhere's other actions have included "Surprise Wedding Reception" and "Slo-Mo Home Depot," in which scores of "agents" pretended to shop at the home-improvement store and then froze in place.

Shocking truths about New York here - Jets extend Cincinnati's playoff woes

Cincinnati, OH (Sports Network) - Shonn Greene and Thomas Jones each rushed for a score to headline New York's top-ranked rushing attack, and the Jets beat the Bengals for the second straight week, 24-14, to advance to the AFC's divisional round and extend Cincinnati's playoff win drought to 19 seasons.

The rookie Greene ran for 135 yards on 21 carries for the Jets (10-7), who won a playoff game for the first time since the 2004 season. They beat the Bengals, 37-0, in Week 17 to earn a postseason spot. Jones finished with 34 yards on 15 touches to help New York, the fifth seed, advance to face either Indianapolis or San Diego next week.

Mark Sanchez, also a rookie, threw for 182 yards and a touchdown on 12-of-15 passing, but more importantly did not turn the ball over. Dustin Keller added 99 yards and a score on three catches, as the Jets did not commit any turnovers in the win.

Cedric Benson ran for a franchise playoff-record 169 yards and a score on 21 carries for the Bengals (10-7), who have not recorded a playoff win since January 6, 1991 -- the longest such drought in the NFL for any franchise that has made the playoffs at least once.

Carson Palmer threw for just 146 yards with a score and an interception on 18- of-36 throws, as Cincinnati committed two turnovers -- both in New York territory. Former Jet Laveranues Coles had six catches for 48 yards and a touchdown, but Chad Ochocinco, whose 120-game catch streak ended last week against the Jets, had just two catches for 28 yards in defeat.

As playoff games so often do, Saturday's contest featured a hero role for one kicker and a goat for the other. Jets kicker Jay Feely was forced into punting duty after Steve Weatherford came down with an illness, and he put three of his seven punts inside the Bengals 20 while making his only field goal attempt. On the other hand, Cincinnati kicker Shayne Graham missed both of his field goal tries from 35 and 28 yards away, respectively.

Graham missed a 35-yard field goal with a chance to draw the Bengals to within four with 6 1/2 minutes left in the third, and the Jets responded with a scoring drive to build a two-touchdown lead.

The series went 75 yards in eight plays, culminating in Jones' scamper up the middle from nine yards away. Jerricho Cotchery made a nifty catch on the first play of the drive, barely keeping his toes in play for an 18-yard gain, and the only third down was converted when Sanchez hit Braylon Edwards on a 16- yard slant play to set up the score and a 21-7 lead with 2:18 to go.

The Bengals were able to keep their hopes alive early in the fourth, as Benson burst through the right side nearly untouched for a 47-yard touchdown run with 11:04 to play, cutting the team's deficit in half.

The Jets, though, responded with another scoring drive. Sanchez hit Keller on a short pass to the left side, and Keller cut to his right to avoid a defender for a 43-yard gain to the Bengals' 23. New York got to the two before a 20- yard Feely field goal with 5:47 left made it a 10-point game.

Cincinnati drove deep into New York territory with just under four minutes to play, but Graham pushed a 28-yard attempt just to the right for another crucial miss. After a Jets punt, the Bengals' final possession ended with a pair of sacks.

Bernard Scott appeared to put the Bengals in scoring position right away on a frigid 21-degree day that felt like it was nine degrees, returning the opening kickoff 56 yards to the Jets' 36. On 3rd-and-4, Palmer threw a high pass to Coles, who caught the ball above his head at the 26 before fumbling the ball away to New York.

The Jets punted on their first drive, using the kicker Feely to replace Weatherford, and Cincinnati's Rico Murray grabbed a bouncing ball and sprinted 23 yards to the New York 45. Benson exploded up the middle on the next play for a 19-yard gain, and Palmer later hit Coles on a crossing route near the left pylon on 3rd-and-4 for an 11-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 7:07 left in the first quarter.

Despite holding a seven-point lead, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis wasted both of his team challenges in the first quarter, losing both.

The game was nearly tied late in the first quarter, as Sanchez had a perfectly thrown potential 41-yard touchdown pass travel right through Edwards' hands. New York eventually punted on the series.

Cincinnati went three-and-out from inside its own 20, and the Jets regained possession on the opposing 47. After Jones ran for eight yards, Greene took a counter pitch around the left end for a 39-yard sprint to the end zone for a tie game with just under 12 minutes remaining.

The lack of challenges came back to haunt the Bengals before halftime. After Darrelle Revis intercepted a pass intended for Ochocinco deep in Jets territory, New York had the ball at its own 43.

On 3rd-and-12, Sanchez hit Cotchery on a slant route for a 14-yard gain, and he then found Keller wide open down the right sideline around the 20. Keller came close to going out of bounds near the goal-line but dragged a defender into the end zone for a 45-yard score with 6:19 minutes left for a 14-7 lead, which held through the half.

The Jets got the ball first in the second half and ran seven straight times to gain the Cincinnati 24-yard line. Feely drilled a 42-yard field goal, but a holding penalty negated the three points; he then hit a 52-yarder, but the play was whistled dead for a false start, forcing the team to punt.

The Bengals then drove down the field using a Benson 27-yard run and a 26-yard pass interference penalty on Revis, but Graham's 35-yard field goal attempt veered wide left to keep the seven-point margin intact.

Game Notes

The Jets will face the Colts next week if the Patriots beat the Ravens on Sunday or the Chargers if the Ravens win...New York leads the all-time playoff series with Cincinnati, 2-0...Bengals linebacker Rashad Jeanty broke his leg on the opening kickoff...Coming into the game, the team that won the turnover battle in a playoff contest won 84 percent of the time...This was the fourth playoff game in NFL history where both starting quarterbacks played for the same college (Southern California)...The Jets all-time record for single-game rushing yards in the postseason is held by Freeman McNeil, who ran for 202 yards against the Bengals in 1983. Greene did set the team record for longest rush in a playoff game with his 39-yard touchdown...Benson broke Ickey Woods' record for most rushing yards in a playoff game by a Bengal. Woods ran for 126 yards in a 1988 playoff game...Both teams finished with 171 yards rushing.

Who was the MVP of the Jets' win over the Bengals in the AFC wild-card game?

CINCINNATI - They got the kid to play like this, in games like this. The Jets got him to be a star, for them and their fans in Jersey and for New York. They worked the kid out in Southern California when they were deciding whether to trade up and draft him and Rex Ryan, a coach you may have heard of, said the kid didn't miss a throw. The Jets really got Mark Sanchez to win them their first Super Bowl since Joe Namath, the last star kid they had at quarterback. And Saturday, Paul Brown Stadium, Cincinnati, first pro playoff game of his life, Mark Sanchez made you believe he will do just that, beat everybody some day the way he beat the Bengals.

"One of these days, (Sanchez) is going to be the biggest guy we've got on this team," Rex Ryan said when it was over, 24-14 Jets. "The best. And maybe that day is coming sooner rather than later."

Then the big coach who backed it all up for another week, said this about his rookie quarterback: "We know this guy is gonna be a big-time guy."

And when Sanchez followed his coach to the podium, somebody asked him what he was thinking after Cedric Benson ran away from the coach's defense and made it 21-14 in the fourth quarter. Made it look like a game even though it wasn't.

"Let's go," Sanchez said. "Let's play. Let's go score some points."

And before you knew it he was rolling to his left and finding Dustin Keller wide open down the field and doing what he had done all day, which means throwing the ball exactly where he aimed it. And then the Jets were kicking the field goal that made it 24-14. Sanchez would end up 12-for-15 on the day and 182 yards and if Braylon Edwards doesn't drop a sure touchdown from Sanchez, 41 yards away, first quarter, the numbers are even gaudier than that.

Rookie head coach for the Jets Saturday, rookie quarterback. And rookie running back, too. Shonn Greene, a third-round pick out of Iowa, another guy the Jets traded up to draft, was a big-time guy himself Saturday, running for 135 yards on 21 carries, running 39 yards around left end for the Jets' first touchdown when it was 7-0, Bengals. The last time the Jets won a playoff game in Cincinnati, 26 years ago exactly, Freeman McNeil ran for 211 yards. Greene didn't get to 200 Saturday because Thomas Jones got some carries, too, scored a touchdown himself. But Greene got enough. All day.

And made a prophet out of the big coach.

"You ask him," Ryan said. "I told him before the game, 'Son, I think you can get 150 yards today.'"

But in all the important ways, this was Sanchez's coming-out party, Sanchez helping win the game all day long instead of just trying not to lose it. This is what Mike Tannenbaum, the general manager, saw in him. When it was 7-7, Sanchez rolled to his right and waited for Keller to come open across the field, threw him a perfect ball, watched Keller tightrope his way into the end zone from 10 yards out to put the Jets up a touchdown.

Fascinating: NYC Terror Suspects Face Arraignment

Two Queens, New York men are expected to be arraigned later today in connection with an ongoing terror investigation.

Both of the men reportedly traveled to Pakistan in 2008 with terror suspect Najibullah Zazi. Zazi was arrested in September and charged with conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction. He has pleaded not guilty. According to FBI spokesman Rich Kolko, the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force made the most recent arrests of 25 year old Adis Medunjanin and 24 year old Zarein Ahmedzay.

Authorities have not said on what charges the men are being held.

Medunjanin who was under surveillance by FBI agents, was taken into custody after getting into a car accident on the outskirts of the city. He was nabbed by agents after trying to flee on foot. Agents executing search warrants seized the passports of both men.

Attorney Robert Gottlieb who represents  Medunjanin says he was only made aware of his clients’ arrest by news reports. Medunjanin, who makes a living operating a food cart is a Bosnian immigrant who along with Ahmedzay lived in the same Queens, New York neighborhood as Zazi. Gottlieb says that last September Medunjanin was questioned by authorities for 14 hours and thought the investigation of his client was over.
